History

History of Dance School Balance
Early Beginnings
(1981-1987)
In 1981, Albertine Binsbergen was invited to teach at a ballet and dance studio in Haarlem. Although plans to take over the school were in place, financial challenges made this impossible. In September 1987, she founded her own ballet school, Balletschool Balance, starting with around 40 students. Initially, she taught at various locations in Haarlem before securing a permanent space at Prinsen Bolwerk 3, near the station.
Growth Years
(1987-1997)
Balance grew rapidly from 40 students in its first year to 70 by the fifth year. Albertine’s dedication extended beyond Haarlem, with classes in Volendam and other parts of the Netherlands. Despite fluctuations in student numbers due to her pregnancies between 1989 and 1997, Balance celebrated its 10-year anniversary in 1997, with a steadily growing community.
Expansion and New Locations
(1997-2007)
By its 15th year, Balance had over 100 students. In 2002, Albertine added Monday classes, and in 2005, the school relocated to Ter Cleeffschool, allowing for an expanded schedule. By 2006, Balance had 150 students and offered 15 classes per week. The 20th anniversary in 2007 marked significant growth, with 25 weekly classes and 180 students.
Milestones and Growth
(2007-2019)
In 2012, Balance celebrated its 25th anniversary with a grand reunion and a jubilee performance. The student count surpassed 200, offering a wide variety of classes, from toddler to adult ballet, jazz, and modern dance. By June 2019, Balance reached a peak of 330 students, supported by a dedicated teaching team.
Challenges and Resilience
(2020-2023)
The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 forced the dance school to adapt by offering online and outdoor classes. Despite a significant drop in student numbers and changes in the teaching team, the school continued to thrive. Linde and Ana remained with the school, alongside new teachers Veronika, Nadine, and Sofie.
A New Chapter
(2024)
As of September 2024, Ana Hazler will take over the ownership and management of the school, renaming it to Dansstudio Balance. The team will include Albertine Binsbergen, Sofie van Doorn, Linde Klaver, and Ana Hazler, with Adrian Alvarez handling administrative tasks. The school looks forward to welcoming passionate dancers and helping them enhance their creativity, physical health, and love for dance.
